The recruiting process can be a difficult time in a 17 or 18 year old athlete’s life.
What are the qualifications? When do I visit? How much financial aid will I get? There are tons of questions, and often times, no one to turn to.
Enter George Greer.
Nobody knows the stress these kids are under more than Greer. That’s because Greer sat on the other side of the desk for more than 35 years.
Greer, who recently moved to Rappahannock County after his wife Becky accepted the assistant superintendent’s job at Rappahannock County Public Schools, is the fifth winningest baseball coach in Atlantic Coast Conference history having won three ACC Championships and more than 600 games while serving as skipper at Wake Forest University. He also helped start the program at the University of Connecticut at Avery Point, and served as baseball manager at Davidson University for six seasons.
On Sunday; Jan. 6, Cheer will hold an information seminar for all prospective college athlete — reservations can be made by calling 967-8773. Urn session, entitled “The Other Side of the Desk” will begin at 4 p.m. at Rappahannock County High School’s auditorium and is free of charge.
“A few years ago, I had a friend in New Jersey who’s daughter was being recruited to play softball. He asked me to help out with the selection process, and I found that there were a lot of misconceptions about the recruiting process,” said Greer, who now works with the New York Mets as a coach in their player development department. "I helped clear those up, and my friend said ‘you should do this fulltime.’ So Fve been traveling across the country helping kids understand what they need to do.”
For most kids, Cheer is the only coach they’ve realty had a chance to talk to about the ever-changing NCAA recruitment regulations.
“People are always coming up to me and saying‘you’re the only coach that’s ever taken the time to explain these things,’” Greer said. “Fve been involved with the NCAA’s recruiting guidelines for 35 years, so if I can help a few kids understand what they need to do to get a scholarship or to meet academic requirements, then I feel like Fve accomplished something.”
During his seminar; Greer - who’s also a member of five different hall of feme’s, including the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame where he won*the 1968 championship as player on a Chatham As team that included Thurman Munson, and later coached player’s like Joe Girardi, Ron Darling, John France, and Will Clark as a manager — will tafco time to explain the NCAA’s latest rules and regulations. Some of the topics he will speak on include: definitions of NCAA terms, eligibility; recruitment, self marketing, interviewing talking points, financial aid, and timo management.
“Well cover a list of different bullet points and then HI take time to answer any questions that these students and their parents might have,” Greer said. “Fm not a guidance counselor. Fm not a principal. Fm just a resource unit to help these kids make the best decision. My goal is to get the information out to these kids, so they can make the best impression on recruiters and
