In their first conference game of the season, the beys’ varsity basketball team at Wakefield Country Day School suffered a thorough 85-40 defeat last Thursday tp the Highland Hawks. The loss followed the team’s first win this season — 70-58 earlier this month over Fiesta Valley — and brought the Owls’ overall record to 1-7.
From early on the Owls struggled to break through Highland’s defense. Wakefield’s offense found themselves swarmed on the back court, and point guard Alex Shafran’s quick feet and frenzied bursts of speed seemingly could not make a difference.
The Owls were down 11-7 about five minutes into the game, and at the end of the first quarter had handed over an 11-point lead to the Hawks.
Wakefield could not pick things up, and in the second quarter scored 6 points to Highland’s 20.
