The evolution of the modern cemetery draws much of its inspiration from the "Gardens of the Dead” that were planned in the outlying suburbs of London during the mid-nineteenth century. These eternal resting places featured walled-off fields, catacombs and chapels, and planted trees. As exclusive resting places, they not only provided areas of interment for the dead, they were also places of instruction tor the living. They provoked a mood of quiet contemplation and respect. Within their walls Victorians could wander and ponder the hereafter These fashionable cemeteries soon blossomed around every ma|or British city and were considered one of the great successes of their age. Many served as templates for final resting places in this country.
