The halls of 501 East Piedmont Street echoed with laughter and excitement on Wednesday, Dec. 12.
The new home to Services to Abused Families, Inc. or SAFE was filled with smiling faces during the holiday open house.
Finally coming to fruition after years of planning, volunteers and SAFE employees were overjoyed to show off the result of their hard work. The construction of the new facility was completed this summer and staff moved in six weeks ago.
“It’s beyond words,” said Elizabeth Bevins, SAFE’s Community Resource Liaison. “We went from being a place where we had this idea of a new building and then we worked out the details, where it was going to be and what we needed, it’s just amazing that it’s finally here.”
Established in 1980, SAFE is an agency of the United Way which serves victims of domestic violence and sexual abuse in the five-county region of Culpeper, Fauquier, Madison, Orange, and Rappahannock. By offering a variety of free services and programs to those affected by domestic violence, SAFE fills a void in the community.
“It’s going to open up a lot of opportunities for us,” said Executive Director Melissa DeDomenico-Payne. “We’ve experienced a lot of expansion in the past few years and needed a better layout for all of the projects that we have going on now.”
