Sarah Hathaway, a student at the University of Virginia, warned that independence can be dangerous, however. She said that the responsibility to make it to class rests solely on the students, and that many teachers will not hound those that skip, nor even take attendance.
She urged the high schoolers to show up for class, a seemingly minor effort, but one that some college students do not make. Attendance is important, she said. “It will matter when you take that test and when that grade comes at the end of the semester.”
Rachel Gall found her calling at Christopher Newport University, but only after discovering that a long-time dream was not really what she wanted.
“I was adamant about being a biology major" she said.
She said she wanted to study dolphins and get a job at Sea World. She found science classes unappealing once she got to college, though, and switched to a political science major with a minor in international affairs. She now wants to work in refugee camps.
“You have to take classes that you love,” she said.
