Katherine Hedrick didn’t set out to be an advocate of wild horses. Heck, she didn’t really mean to own one.
But through her Nokota horse Palouse Sunshine, Hedrick has become one of the endangered wild horse breed’s strongest advocates. Even if it was accidental.
When horse shopping five years ago for a foxhunter and event horse, Hedrick heard of a nice gelding at Over The Grass Farm in Middleburg. There, she met Palouse Sunshine, a sturdy chestnut paint owned by Charlie Fleashmann, an outspoken supporter of the endangered wild horse breed who helped found the Nokota Horse Conservancy, j.
Wowed by the hearty horse’s clever athleticism and kind disposition, she bought him,' and, through her association with the NHC, became aware of the plight of the Nokota breed.
The Nokota horses are all very similar,” Hedrick said, explaining that officials at the National Park Service aren’t certain of the Nokota horses’ bloodlines.
They are, therefore, unwilling to protect them as mustangs nor promote them as the feral band of Chincoteague ponies cm Virginia’s Assateague Island are promoted.
