Alphaeus Franklin Cannon of Castleton, died at Fauquier Hospital on Feb. 18. Alphaeus was a native of Rappahannock County, where he was born on April 28, 1916.
He was the son of the late James Franklin and Nena Belle Hockman Cannon. He was known through the county for his work ethic, which he began as a dump truck and expanded into running garages in Sperryville as well as Page County. He was drafted in December of 1941, serving most of WWII overseas. He was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received in action in France on July 31, 1944. When he returned home he began his career as a US Postal carrier from 1948 to 1973. When he retired from the Postal Service he drove a school bus for Rappahannock County until 1986. Throughout his life he farmed extensively; served on the Board of Directors for 40 years of the Rappahannock National Bank; was a lifetime member of the Sperryville VFW; was a founder the Castleton Volunteer Fire Department serving as Chief and President
He is survived by his wife who he married on August 13, 1949, Mida E. “Kitty" Cannon; his daughter and son-in-law, Louise C. and James A. Grigsby and his daughter Margie B. Cannon and fiancee
