RCES celebrates
“Pursuit of
Happiness**
In the spring of 2007. the Rappahannock County Elementary School <RCES> library was one of 2.000 in the country that received the “Pursuit of Happiness* bookshelf from the National Endowment for the Humanities. The bookshelf consists of 19 books and one CD that portray individuals throughout history achieving the goal of ‘Pursuit of Happiness* The library also received 500 bookmarks that were given to the students, “Pursuit of Happiness* book plates that were placed in the gift books and posters that are displayed in the halls. All K-7 students were able to listen to several of the books, discuss the concept of pursuit of happiness and write or create an artwork on the topic. The students’ creations number over 500 and are displayed in the halls of RCES. Staff members have also contributed their own works, which are displayed with the students’ creations.
As an extension of the “Pursuit of Happiness* theme, the library held a book drive, collecting over 880 new and gently used books, which were cleaned, sorted and counted by the Student Government Association <SGA) at RCES. The books will be sent, along with handmade bookmarks created by RCES students, to Como Elementary School in Como, Miss.
