Lillian recalled with admiration her seventh grade teacher and mentor, Julie E. Boddie, when she was a student at the Washington Graded School on Piedmont Avenue. “I was so shy and so bashful," said Aylor, “and she took a real interest in me and encouraged me to recite poetry and perform solo numbers.” When Boddie died in 1986, it was Aylor that suggested that an appreciation service be held in her honor. Dorothy Butler felt the same and between them the Julie E. Boddie Scholarship Committee was started and remains today. Each year when the life of Martin Luther King. Jr. is celebrated, Rappahannock County holds an observance day. On that occasion, a “DreamKeepers" Award is given to that individual who best exemplifies the work and spirit of Dr. King. Today, Aylor remains president of the Julie E. Boddie Scholarship Committee.
