Gathering in Huntly
Robert and Memphis Holland hosted • some 40 people at their home in Riley Hollow to watch the Obama swearing in on TV. There were cheers and tears, but mostly smiles on the faces of those there to “share the moment with neighbors” as Memphis Holland explained why she held the gathering.
She also said she would have better viewing on TV and wanted to see Obama take that oath of office and be able to hear what he had to say afterwards.
Franklin Schmidt of Slate Mills - who was a bodyguard to the Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a member of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference at the time - said it was hard for him to articulate how he felt. “It is a huge moment,” he said. “So many voted for Obama because he was black, but so did many who voted against him...we still have a long way to go.”
“I’m elated,” said Lynn Sullivan of Sperryville. “He’s just what this country needs.”
