Across the county near Amissville, Rappahannock Democrats were having an informal Inauguration party at the home of Ron and Jan Makela. ^ Pam Owen said “there wasn’t a dry eye in the house,” as Obama spoke to the nation.
The Inauguration of the country’s first African- American president “renews my faith in this country,” said John Lesinski. His wife Heidi was still struggling to put her feelings into words.
There were some people staying in Rappahannock who came from Texas and Arizona to see the Inauguration. Victoria Smith, her two daughters and son and her brother and his family — who drove all the way from Tucson, Ariz., - stayed at the House on Water Street in Sperryville.
Smith said they spent a lot of time driving and waiting for metro trains, but that all in all the experience was worth it.
“This is something that my children will remember the rest of their lives,” she said.
