ALEC is my name and I .am a Lurcher. That’s not a breed, but a type of dog, usually bred from a Greyhound mixed with, say ... a terrier. Legend has it that I am descended from dogs in Ireland and Great Britain, used by Roma—gypsies is what you may call those folks—to catch rabbits. A type of ‘‘sight’’ hound (as opposed to scent hounds) is another way to think of us. And yes,, I can catch a rabbit. I am an 18-month-old male, neutered, and about as regal in my behavior as any companion you could find.
