by Belgian composer Cesar Frank, written after his girlfriend left him, led the students to explore how the music can convey sad feelings. Samantha Keys captured the success of the Amstel Quartet in teaching how music conveys feelings.
“I liked it a lot...how the sounds sounded,” she said. “Some were sad and some were happy. I liked them all.”
Finally, a bit of melody was played by the baritone sax and a CD by the Amstel Quartet was offered to the student who could guess the song. Steven Nelson knew he was the winner when the group played the Star Spangled Banner.
