There can be little question as to
the notes of bigotry, discord, and intolerance offered by the recent letter of L. Torrance of Amissville (Rappahannock News, Jan. 15 ).
Little wonder that Christians are seen in many places around the world as just that. It is truly unfortunate; for the truth, as the founders of all the world’s great religions recognize, is not the province of one and only one. No ONE has all the answers to the exclusion of everyone else’s.
Perhaps it is a matter of misunderstanding. Perhaps what is expressed by L. Torrance is not really what Methodists believe. If it is, then it is a clear statement that the interpretations of the church have overridden the teachings of the Masters, Jesus included.
I do not go to the church frequented by L. Torrance but if it is a Christian church and what L. Torrance says in the letter to the editor is the feelings and teachings of the church, then I am most glad of it and sad indeed that such bigotry and intolerance is the apparent core.
It is a great gift to know what is right for one’s self and to live one’s own life as an example of that faith
