THE SEASONS OF LIFE
In the metaphors of our language, it has always been quite common to encapsulate a human lifetime w ithin the boundaries of a year. The stages of life are then seen as seasons. Spring is likened to birth, w ilh its promise of youth and bloom. Then comes the robust growth of summer and the potential of dreams as yet unfilled. Autumn is a season of serenity and maturity, during which the experiences of the preceding months are deftly applied so that w e may reap the harvest of all that we have imagined and accomplished to that point Lastly, the frozen beautv of w inter carries us to a slow, but sure, denouement during which we may reflect on the experience and the effect of our lives. The great French poet and dramatist Victor Hugo personalized the seasons of life with the words: "Winter is on hand, but eternal spring is in my heart The nearer 1 approach the end the plarst^rT hear around me the immortal symphonies of the worlds which invite me."
