Already the town has paid its wastewater project manager and engineering consulting firm WW Associates of Charlottesville close to $500,000 over the last five years for services related to both the water system and the wastewater project.
In conversations with town officials, some acknowledge that growth projections in the model presented initially were not very realistic, but that since then they have worked to pare down those projections. There is no threat of immediate crisis, they continue, and even worst case scenarios show potential shortfalls beyond five years out to be manageable.
Many property owners are still uneasy about the debt the town is committed to, and potential, un-budgeted costs such as the one that came to light at the last meeting involving water main and meter repair. (See related story' on Page A1 >.
Sharon Luke - an attorney and property owner in town, who circulated the petition along with Bruce and Pat Giles - said "when we had the opportunity to talk to people, they were really concerned about the debt and fees” and that these people weren’t normally comfortable speaking in public at a meeting.
