Now that spring and warm weahter has finally gotten here, the fifty-eight farm pond owners in C.lpeper and Rappahannock counties are applying fertilizer to their ponds. Ponds are fertilized at intervals, during the seven warm month- or the year at the rate of 1200 to loOO lb per acre of surface water' per year. Regular inorganic pond fertilizer may he purchased directly from dealers. An 8-8-2 analysis is the most com* mon ready mixed fertilizer. Many farmers utilize the regular grain fertilizers that they may have available on the farm. One hundred It) of a 3-12-fi may he fortified with r.tt) of nitrate of soda and applied in that proportion. Only tK so ponds that have been stocked with fish need he fertilized.
The use of fertilizer in ponds perform- two functions. It causes the various species of algae to grow in the water, thus providing food for the fish. The presence of algae in the water does not allow the -iin to penetrate to a depth of greater than 12 to 18 inches and therefore eliminates the growth of sea weeds and swamp grasses on the floor of the pond.
