He was an American legislator and educator. He was bom in Jefferson county.

He graduated from Columbian College, Washington, D. C., and then attended University of Virginia. He served in the Confederate Army.

He was a professor of Latin at George Washington University, 1865 to 1871. In 1883 he became president of University of West Virginia.

In 1892 he was chairman of the ■ Democratic National Convention. In 1835 he was postmaster-general under President Cleveland. On the expiration of his term, he became president of Washington and Lee University.

Last week’s famous Virginian was George Washington.
