Directions on some wall cleaners suggest no rinsing. This is probably because manufacturers have found that the small amount of detergent left on the wall will do less damage than too much rubbing when the finish is wet.

Avoid scouring walls, woodwork and all finished surfaces, Mrs. Williamson urges. The many good cleaning materials on the market today make scouring unnecessary, even for very soiled paint. Scouring not only removes finish but also roughens the surface so that it gathers soil more easily. Strongly alkaline substances, such as washing soda or ammonia, are hard on paint because they dry it and in time make it flake off. They also may affect the color.

When using any cleaner, Mrs. Williamson has found that it pays to read and follow directions carefully! If the cleaner calls for ringing afterwards this should be done thoroughly and carefully, without splashing, dripping or soaking. But if directions advise against rinsing, this indicates that the little cleaner left after drying will not cause undue damage or be as hard on the finish jas wear from rubbing and rinsing.
