People found they could by their own efforts rise from rags to riches. Previous to this time there had been a well developed caste system, as there is in some countries even today. If a person was born in a low social class, he had to stay there the rest of his life. But now here was glorius freedom and people began to think that if a person stayed poor it was his very own fault. If he didn’t succeed then he hadnot worked hard enough, or he had been a spendthrift, a drunkard. Proverty ivas a sin in those days. Do we begin to see something that sounds familiar?
