Fire-Burning Laws
Still In Effect
Fire-burning laws with hours restricted, 4 p.m. to midnight, are still in effect in Rappahannock county.
According, to an opinion expressed by the Attorney General, when the law as passed by the General Assembly was accepted by a majority of the governing body of a county, it then became a state law and the local board of supervisors had no power to rescind it.
A fire was reported in Harris Hollow yesterday morning. When Fire Warden Raymond Johnson investigated, J. E. Keyser was most co-operative and extinguished the fire immediately, stating that he understood the hours had been changed and that he could burn hr sh at any hour.
Two of the largest timber fires in the county were fought Sunday, April lfi. A fire on the Payne land near Crest Hill, in Flint Hill Neighborhood, burned over 125 acres, and about 70 acres of the land of J. U. Blankenbaker ami others near Laurel Mills was burned over. These estimates of acreage are counting brushland and woodland only, no consideration was made of open land burned.
During the last two weeks there have been six fires in Rappahannock county necessitating firefighting crews. D ring these fires some of them have reached such proportions that a ci'ew from Fauquier was called in and on other occasions the Culpeper and Front Royal fire companies helped.
The past six weeks have shown the largest fire-fighting season since the forest warden organization was set up. The dry weather and high winds have made fire control difficult. . Fire At Ben ‘ Venue
A large fire was being fought all yesterday afternoon in the Ben Venue neighborhood. A 40-mile wind wf. whinping the flames but toward night it was beginning to look like the fire-fighters would win.
The ladies of the Auxiliary «to the fire company at Washington got to work about supper time last evening and sent 200 sandwiches and seven gallons of coffee to the men \*Jio had been fighting fire all afternoon in the Ben Venue neighborhood.
