With spring a-eprung, we can get to the problem of seeding those bare spots in the yard. It’s a disheartening job, year after yea.. Patches of that desplicable frost-killed grass will creep into the lawn every year.
What are they paying for chickweed per ton this year? That would seem to be the only chance to get any returns from the spring grass situation on some lawns— mine included.
This annua] fight to get the yard looking decent always brings to mind the story told by the caretaker of one of those magnificent several-acre lawns which are the show places of England. When asked the secret of the beautiful sod, he replied:
You seed the lawn, put on plenty of fertilizer, pull out' all the weeds, roll it well with a heavy roller, and keep it cut evenly, but not too short. Follow this practice rigidly every year, and after about 600 years you have a sod like this—and he pointed out over an old English estate.

Front Royal's Bing Crosby Day even broke The New Work Times. The following paragraph, labelled "Gratitude,” appeared in the column of A. H. Weiler in the Sunday edition of April 9:
GRATITUDE—Bing Crosby is undoubtedly certain at this point that if you give you also receive. The eminent "Groaner,” partaking wholeheartedly in the innocent merriments attending the premiere of his film "Riding High” down in Front Royal, Va~, recently sang, rode in parades, kidded the kids and donated $3,600 of his own money toward building a recreation arena in the Old Dominion town. On the other hand, the grateful local burghers came back with a slew of assorted gifts for their crooning benefactor.,.

"Riding High” indeed!
