John W. Whittemore, Associate Dean of Engineering, announces the beginning this fall of a Cooperative Engineering Program at VPI, whereby it will be possible for worthy and needy students to obtain an engineering education with very little personal cost. The student will go to college for one quarter and then will be employed in an industry. He iwill alternate between college and industry until he reaches his senior year which will be spent in college. A few pamphlets describing the program are available at this office to interested parties. r , * * *
I am happy to learn that Tommy Eastham of Flint Hill, ha3 procured a “Bush Hog” and will do custom work in clearing land of bushes, briars and small saplings. This piece of machinery apparently is a great labor saver and should prove popular on many of our farms where owners haven’t been able to keep as neat as they would like because of labor costs and scarcity. Your writer saw Tommy clear piece of land in less than an hour which would have taken qne man at least a full day to clean with a bush scythe and in addition the filth was pulverized into a mulch which would readily decay. Bob Graves of Madison county, purchased one of these machines and reported clearing an acre of land (new ground) in 45 minutes which contained saplings as large in diameter as his forearm. It will be interesting to see how well a “bush hog” can handle prunings winrowed in an orchard.
