OUR OWN CARNIVAL— WE CAN HAVE IT
This may sound like “locking the barn* after the horse is stolen,” but it never occurred to anyone that people would fall for all the gambling games at the carnival last week. -
The word “gambling” is misused, for which I apologize. In a “gamble” you have a chance; in those wheel-games, turn-around joints, bucket stores, and swinging ball joints, you haven’t a chance. The parlance among the carnival people is “flat-joints,” and they got the name because no one leaves until he’s flat-brok£. A man was overheard asking one of the carnival men how he could win at one of those games. The reply came quick and honest: “If I should happen to break a leg or fall dead, you might win.”
The carnival was for the benefit of the fire company, and the fire company got precious little of the money that was spent.
These carnival people lose so much money on their games is the reason they can afford to lay on the beaches of Florida all winter, and watch the dog and horse races, while we are working in the snow and ice trying to make a few dollars for them the next summer.
Here’s a suggestion, formulated into a plan. (If a set of plans can be drawn up, it gives something to tear down and start building upon.)
