and the ladies of the auxiliaries get together and build the stands, paint the game boards, and have the complete carnival equipment locally owned. For ,the first years rent the rides; after a few years there may be money enough to Ibuy them.
Adjoining counties give their own carnivals for the fire companies and it’s known that several of our neighboring counties have volunteered to help us get started.
Any other suggestions anyone may have will 'be appreciated, and published if they so desire.
TIME TO HOLLER
A recent editorial in the Portland, Oregon, Journal cited some facts that should make the weary, beaten taxpayers of the country sit up on their hind legs and holler.
There is a schoolteacher for every 132 people in Oregon—but there is a Federal civilian employe for each 85 persons.
Totll government payrolls— Federal, state and local—came to $1,895,000,000 last April alone. This was a rise of 16 per cent from the same month in 1951 and marked the biggest April-to-April jump on record.
In that month, the number of public employees, all supported out of Federal, state, or local taxes, was just under 7,000,000.
The Journal said, “No wonder the taxpayer groans.” He’s going to groan a lot louder unless drastic action is taken to cut out government waste and extravagance in every department of government.
The demand for that must have its origin in the grassroots — in every town and city and rural area in the country. And we must demand economy in matters that affect us—not just the other fellow. The lead must be taken by chambers of commerce and every kind of business, civic, labor and consumer groups. Then, and only then, will Congress and legislatures listen and do something beside talk.
