Meat Packers Explain
Strike To Stockholders
As pickets recently surrounded the strike-closed Shen-Valley Meat Packers, Inc., plant at Timberville, the board of directors, of fwhich President Robert Graves, of Syria, is chairman, sent a letter to all of the 1700 stockholders of the cooperative advising them of the negotiations which preceded the closing of the most modern establishment- of its kind in the East.
The plant closed Monday, Aug. 4, with the exception of the shipment of meat which was processed before the shut-down.
The Meat Packers letter stated that it made a wage increase and job classification proposal to the union. This proposal, adds the letter, would have cost the companya minimum of $10,000 additional per year to do business and would have established the highest industrial wage being paid workers by any plant in this area.
The letter adds that the Union first accepted/ the proposal and then decided to call the strike because the company could not guarantee at least f^ur hours work on Monday, Aug. 4 and Tuesday, Aug. 5. It adds the company could not give this guarantee as it had no livestock to work on, having ceased buying iwith a strike impending.
