The appointment of Rayner Varser Snead as the district jurge marked the placing of the county’s commonwealth attorney in a place a honor and respect. To local people, who know Rayner Snead, it’s no surprise that he should be appointed. A modest man, conscientious, Mr. Snead is known for his quiet interest in his fellowman. He has a strong sense of right and wants the world to be a better place in which to live.
The county has every right to feel proud of their local boy and to wish Judge Snead God-speed.
Hie End’s the limit
A letter to the editor requested that there be more articles in the paper like the one of January 15 entitled “More About Social Security.”
There’s always a desire to furnish the readers with material that is pleasing to the ear, but this subject of (so-called) social security has just about been talked to death.
There is no refuting the argument in many spots and cases, social se. curity benefits hive done a good job. Widows and fatherless children have been allowed to stay together in a normal home life. That such is good, there is no denial. There have been other instances where social security has done well.
No matter how much it has done, no one has yet proved that the whole set-up of social sceurity was either Constitutional or legal. Of course, Mrs. Cain, down in Mississippi, called it “un-American, un-Constitutional, illegal, and immoral.” Maybe she’s right
There are still a few citizens who liked to be asked if they want oldage insurance, and feel that they have the privilege pf naming the insurance company to handle the business for them. Nfc> matter how sweet the benefits and how wonderful the returns, a few people resent being forced into an insurance policy and sent a bill for the annual payment
In a few quarters there are voters who accept the situation with a fatalistic view. “Social Security is here to stay,” they say, “and I’m just a little guy and I can’t buck the whole government—but that doesn’t say I’m going to like it!”
