The Charlottesville Virginia Forest Service District Office reports nearly one-half of the million trees of their allotment have been sold for the spring planting season ending April 1, 1953.
The Forest Service states that planting can be profitable if carried out on areas such as the following:
1. On idle or abandoned fields which are more suitable for trees than for crops or pastures.
2. On areas desired for tree growth that are not naturally seeding in.
3. On former pine areas where undesirable hardwoods are predominating.
4. As underplanting of natural open stands, such as woodlands that have large openings.
5. On areas to control erosion, to proyide windbreaks for farm buildings.
6. When shelter planting for game or livestock are desired.
Tree seedlings can be planted by hand or with a mechanical tree planter that the Forest Service has for renting to persons planting 8,000 or more trees. By hand planting, 500 to 800 can be planted per man day. When the trees are spaced 6| feet apart, it requires 1.00 trees to plant an acre. . . L
