Forest Fires Loss
Great in 1952 ~
Forest fires destroyed 4,690 acres during 1952 in the Virginia Forest Service, Northern Piedmont 16county District, according to District Forester D.G. Wilfong, Jr.
The 231 fires reported in 1952 were only 2 fires less than in 1951 when 233 fires burned 2,033 acres.
The largest fires occurred during the exceptionally dry periods of April and October. Fluvanna County lost 1,218 acres in the District’s largest fire during April, and the second largest fire was 1,174 acres in Nelson County on October 24. The extended dry spell lasting three weeks in October and early November, without rain, resulted in the loss of over 2,000 acres.
One death resulted from a fire in Spotsylvania County, and numerous buildings and other valuable property were destroyed in these outbreaks of fires. ~
