Beginning 3.6 miles east of Luray, the project is designed to broaden sharp curves, ease grades and build a third, or truck lane on the west side of the Blue Ridge from the Skyline Drive to the foot of the mountain.
The added 12-foot “creep” lane will allow traffic going up the mountain to pass slow-moving trucks and thus relieve the congestion that now exists when vehicles are unable to pass on the narrow road and sharp turns.
The 3.77-mile job will cost an estimated 3254,000, financed from primary highway allocations made to the Staunton Highway District in Page county.
Completion of this section will be completed by the end of the year.
