Care Required in
Filling Horiz. Silos -
Farmers should take more care In filling horizontal silos rthan they do in filling tower silos, points out L. B. Driggers, assistant Extension agricultural engineer at Virginia Tech. He says that the usual method of filling horizontal silos is by depositing the chopped forage’ directly into the silos from wagons, trailers, or dump trucks. In some instances, he adds, the forage is unloaded onto an elevator or into a blower that conveys it into the silo. “It’s, better to use dump trucks or wagons with mechanical loaders,” says Driggers, “because you can spread the forage evenly in thin layers. This reduces the labor requirements for spreading and makes the job of compacting much easier. The more uniformly and smoothly you spread the forage in the silo, the better the results of the packing. Density variations in the silage are less when the forage is evenly spread.” For best results in packing, the engineer suggests driving a wheeled tractor back and forth over the forage. He (points out that the packing (done by the tractor is supple-' (mented by the wagons or 'trucks used for hauling the 'forage which are pulled or driven through the silo during unloading. He says that track type tractors can also be used for packing. “The procedures used in packing with wheeled tractors will vary,” says Driggers, “but where filling proceeds at
