Agronomy experiments point out that early corn hybrids yield about 62% ears in the form of silage; intermediate hybrids approximately 56% of weight in ears while the late hybrids, which will yield the greatest tonnage of green matter, have only 50% ears. Looking at corn in the field at this time will help one decide whether the variety is yielding most of the total tonnage in stalk or ears. Also one can be alert for root diseases, broken, and lodged stalks, etc.

FOUR HUNDRED EIGHTYTWO head of calves have been weighe4 apd, graded recently in Rappahannock herds under the official Virginia Beef Cattle Improvement program. Herds included were: The Oaks, Orchard Hill, Wakefield Manor, Hidden Valley Farm, Cannon Farm, Rock Cottage, Red OakRanch and Kilby Farm.
At present Mrs. Lois D. Snead has the only local herd enrolled in the Commercial BCIA program, however H. L. Manwaring, Norman Wilbur and Lowell Archer have already said their herds would “jine-up” in time for the ’66 calf crop.
