An escaped convict, after hiding in the mountains for | thirty odd hours, was appreihended Friday night when hej i approached the highway to ^hitchhike a ride to freedom.; Johnny Taylor, 3 i, who was’ in Camp 11 at Culpeper, was I among ten convicts workingon! Route 618 near Woodville Thursday, November 4. About 2:30 he made a break over an embankment. A guard fired at him twice, but he managed toi escape into nearby brush. With the local Sheriff’s department, State Police and| guards patrolling until late' into the night, Taylor hid out j
on Bessie Belle Mountain. The j I search by officers resumed. ' again early Friday morning; ; and continued throughout the| day. A guard spotted him once in the mountain. Taylor secured a pair of ! pants from a dump and Friday; ! night stopped at an unidenti■ fied farm house where he was given a hot meal and a change of clothes by people who were unaware he was a hunted man.
New Construction at
Skyline Ski Area
Plans are currently underway for improvements at the Skyline Ski Area for the ness season. According to Mr. Bob Reid, the general manager, a new facility to handle the ski rental equipment (boots, skis and poles) is being constructed. “A semarate buildI ing across the road from the Day Lodge will help to reduce the congestion and to make for a more efficient handling of the large numbers of skiers we anticipate will descend upon us on the week1 ends”, Mr. Reid stated.
Also planned. is .the. conferpf1 tion of a teaching area for [ beginning skiers. “We need a 1 relatively flat area where new *1 skiers can learn to stand up r on their skies, and to turn ' and stop, before they start 1 using the slopes serviced by the rope tows or the T-bar : left”, comments Mr. Sears ■ Raymond, Ski School Director The new area will be located directly south of the upper parking area, former site of the old Johnson house. Skyline is readying itself to handle crowds of 1,000to 1,500 skiers on peak week-ends during the winter season. Mr. Reid said “the few good week; ends we have last year demonstrated to us that we have to be prepared for overflow crowds whenever the skiing conditions are better than avep age”.
