On Hunting Accidents
The Virginia Game Commis;sion reminds hunters that over half of all hunting accidents ;occur at ranges less than 10 yards. Hunters who relax and get careless around camp or vehicles are really a more serious threat than the occa sional trigger happy individual in the woods. Know where your gun, and the other fellow's is pointed at all times. Carrying loaded weapons in a car is a practice that can cost you or a hunting companion his life, says the Virginia Game Commission. Always unload a gun and open the action before placing it in a vehicle. The few seconds it takes may save a life. *

A missed opportunity for a shot at game is slight indeed, when compared to a lifetime ot regret that can follow a hasty decision. The most common hunting accident occurs in the open, at close range and around mid day, reminds the Virginia Game Commission. Don’t ever assume that you are immune from accident. Stay alert and stay alive! Park your hunting weapon in a safe place, says the Vir ginia Game Commission. Guns leaned against trees, rocks or vehicles are nothing but booby traps. Each year a number of hunters are killed and injured by weapons slipping from such careless positions. A g‘un can’t think! You can. Have a safe place to store guns and ammunition in the home and be sure they are always put there, cautions the Virginia Game Commission. A few seconds of careless ness when you return tired from a hunting trip may cost the life of one of your loved ones. Make safety a habit! Treat your gun with the respect due a lethal weapon, says the Virginia Game Com mission. A gun is not intended for a club, a crutch or a pry bar, and using it as such is asking for trouble. Use your weapon only for the purpose for which it was built. A well kept gun is a joy to own! A mistreated weapon is a lia bility. Young hunters are responsi ble for a large portion of the hunting accidents which occur in Virginia each fall, says the Game Commission. Don't take a youngster into the woods with out a thorough briefing on safe gun handling. Set a good exam pie for him and your other hunt ing companions. Last year 57 persons were injured or killed in hunting accidents across the state.
