If Virginia’s whitetailed deer could read calendars, they would probably put a bigcircle around November 15. For on that day, the woodland home of the whitetail will be invaded by some 225,000 nimrods garbed in all the colors of the rainbow and equipped with nearly every describable kindofrifle and shotgun. In fact, there’ll be a few more hunters than deer, since Virginia’s deer population is thought to number 200,000 and holding steady.
It doesn't take the wary white tail long to learn he’s the primary target of this mighty hunter army. The hunter has his best chance of bagging a deer on opening day when more than half of the total season’s kill is taken. Four out of every five of Virginia’s whitetails, however, will manage to evade the hunter for the entire season. It takes a mighty sneaky critter ’ to hide from so many for so long. While deer can’t shoot back at the hunter, they are past masters at the art of evading him. This explains why, with nearly an equal ratio of deer and hunters, that only about one out of six hunters will shoot a deer.
To most hunters, every deer season is a success because of the fun of planning and preparing for the hunt, the comradeship and associations with other hunters, the quiet beauty of the woodland, the challenge of matching wits with the evasive deer, the thrilling crash of an approaching deer, perhaps the famous near shock of buck fever, and the fireside memories that may be recalled over a lifetime.
Deer occur throughout Virginia and are hunted in all the counties except Buchanan and Northampton, and the City of Arlington.
