Nearing Completion
The harvest of Virginia’s 1965 apple crop is in the windup stage. Rains in late August and September helped tremendously in overcoming a serious summer drought. The Virginia Crop Reporting Service now estimates Virginia’s apple crop at 10.5 million bushels, slightly above an average crop of around ten million bushels. September was exceptionally hot in Virginia delaying harvest somewhat. October weather was exceptionally favorable with cool nights and moderately warm days makingfor high color and quality. Old-timers in the apple business state that they cannot remember when apple growers were faced with more difficulties than in 1965. In addition to very unfavorable weather prior to October they had the man-made catastrophe of being forced to use very undependable harvest labor that not only didn’t know how to pick apples, but unfortunately didn't care to learn. In spite of all of these hardships consumers will find ample quantities of Virginia Apples being offered for the many uses of this versatile fruit.
