~5oil Retardant Finishes

Homemakers can now purchase fabrics with soil retardant finishes, says Mrs. Mildred A. Payne, Extension home furnishings specialist . at Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

She says that the two main types are the water repellents and the fluoridizers. “Some water repellent finishes lose their effectiveness after cleaning," explains Mrs. Payne. “Others are labeled durable, which means that they survive laundering or dry cleaning. “The fluoridizers repel and resist oil and grease as well as water-borne stains. If you spill coffee, for instance, on a sofa on which the upholstery fabric has been treated with this repellent the liquid will just 'head up' on the surface. You can remove it simply by blotting it quickly and gently with a cloth or tissue. “Dry soil also sits up on the surface until you remove it with a vacuum cleaner or whisk broom. If the stain has seeped into the weave of the fabric between the fibers, you can remove it by dabbing the area with a solvent-dampened cloth." Mrs. Payne says fabrics with fluoridizer finishes will not withstand constant assaults from muddy feet, gooey desserts, and urban soot, but that under normal conditions they will cut down on cleaning costa You cancleanthefabrics many times, she says, and still retain their protective power.
