Fish, Gobbler Change
The Virginia Commission of Game and Inland Fisheries will meet in Richmond Friday, January 14, to consider a fish regulation proposal drafted at their December meeting, and to draft a proposal for a 1966 spring gobbler season, according to Executive Director Chester F. Phelps. The Droposed change in the fishing regulati6n would add a section of Big Cedar Creek in Russell County to the list i of fish-for-fun streams. In these areas only artificial lures with single barbless hooks may be used and all fish caught must be immediately returned to the water. The fish-for-fun section of Big Cedar Creek would extend one half mile downstream and onetenth mile upstream from the Route 19 bridge. The stream is not publicly owned and the fish-for-fun facility here would be made possible through cooperative agreements with local landowners. If this proposal is adopted the Commission plans to stock the designated section of the stream with big rainbowsfrom Commission hatcheries. The Commission also plans to draft a proposal setting up dates and open counties for a spring gobbler season in 1966. Last year a 7 day season was approved for 63 counties during late April and early May. Hunters bagged 436 of the big birds during this season. 'Sportsmen’s groups desiP ing to approach the Commission regarding - opening counties not opened last year should do so at this meeting since once a county is omit ted from the listing in the proposal, it may not be added later," Phelps said. The meet ing is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m. in the Commission room, 7 North Second Street, Richmond.
