Recently a considerable ad appeared in several national magazines offering a bonus of three of the great classic works, of the past to those wishing to Join this national Book of the Month Club. This is interesting from several points of view. One is that the Club must have felt that there is a renewed interest in rereading the classics, and that such an offer would appeal to large numbers. Another interesting point may be that the Club is hard put to find a widely accepted contemporary work that has not already been made available in many forms. The third point, one that seems very sound, is that the pendulum is swinging back, as it does periodically, to those great works of the finest minds this world has ever produced. It is in the great literature of the past, tried by many peoples over
long periods of time, and tested in marly changes of government, economics, and philosophy, that man can find anchor age in what is true and good. The people of Rappahannock do not need to join the Book | Clubs to get such fine bonuses | as the classics being offered, nor will it be necessary to go out and purcha|e them. Your County Libraay has a large assortment of the great literature of all time. The Greek and Roman classics, drama, poetry and prose are well stocked in our library. There is much history, philosophy i and biography of the great ; renaissance writers, also the best of English works of the 17th and 18th centuries. A goodly number of our own early American authors, (whose works are becoming collectors items) are on our shelves. Mark ‘Twain Snd Stephen Crane are two novelists who will always be up stage among our 19th century Americans. Winter nights are times we can revisit, or visit for the first time, with the , great men of the past through their books.
