The Virginia State Department of Health has been designated as the state agency to help administer the Social Security Administration's new health insurance program, the Department and two federal agencies announced jointly Friday at a press conference. The announcement was made by Dr. Mack I. Shanholtz, State Health Commissioner; Dr. Emil E. Palmquist, Regional Health Director for Region III of the U. S. Public Health Service; and Jessie L. Lynn, Regional Representative of the Social Security Administration's Bureau of Health Insurance.
The agreement, which was completed recently and which has been signed by Dr. Shanholtz, spells out the Health Department’s role in determining which hospitals, extended care facilities and home health agencies in Virginia meet requirements for participation under the socalled Medicare provisions, and in helping other institutions to qualify. The hospital'insurance and supplementary insurance provisions of the lawfbetome effective July 1. -Services in extended-care facilities--including skilled’nursing homes and convalescent sections of hospitals--won’t be available until January 1, 1967.
