Permanent Press Clothes
Clothing bearing the "wash and wear” tag has had a long, interesting, and shaky history. Earlier wash and wear garments left a lot to be desired, and as a result there is some skepticism about more recent versions. Now, however, manufacturers are claiming an advance in the wash and wear industry —for permanent press has come on the market. According to one of the popular consumer magazines, by next spring 40 per cent of women's and children's lightweight clothing, and a higher percentage of men's clothing, will be sporting tags with claims for permanent press, hold-acrease, or never wrinkle.
Permanent press is achieved by a new method which involves treating the material with a resin and then curing the fabric after it has been made into garments. Creases and pleats are baked into the final garment. As with any new product, there are problems to be aware of when buying. It is important to buy a size that fits, for once the pleats and cuffs have been set by heat, alteration is almost impossible.
When 100 percent cotton is treated with a permanent press finish, the cotton is weak ened and the abrasion resistance lowered. To counteract this loss of strength, many permanent press finishes are put on blends of cotton and synthetic fibers. Another problem is in color changes. Occasionally, a white fabric will be yellowed by the finish, and because of the nature of the finish, chlorine bleaches should not be used. There may also be some lightening of a dark color at the crease line in some instances. Miss Barbara Wain, Clothing Specialist at V.P.I. advises, check labels for careful instructions and follow these to protect the garment. Hints
