Afternoon Election
Mrs. Dorothy Davis, though she was not a candidate for election, was re-elected as mayor of the Town of Washington. The vote was a writein, since no candidate had filed for the position. Whether or not Mrs. Davis will serve has not been determined, nor has the legality of the election been determined. The Rappahannock County Electoral Board had not notified election officials of their duty to act on June 11 for the town election, consequently, the polls were not opened for business until past the noon hour, rather than at the prescribed 6 a.m. in the morning. Mrs. Bertha Armel and Mrs. Edna Wayland, all who had filed as candidates and whose names appeared on the ballot. They received 28, 26, 27 votes respectively. Mrs. Virginia Miller was reelected to the position of treasurer. She had filed candidacy and her name was on the ballot. She received 28 votes. Mrs. Dorothy B. Hawkins and Mrs. Christine Johnston received 13 and 8 votes, respectively and each has been a council member but did not file as candidates this time. With so many blanks to be written in a scattering of a dozen other people got from one to three votes and Mrs. Mary H. Lea was given six.
