The Rappahannock Racketeers defeated the Front Royal Tennis Team 4 matches to one on Sunday June 9th. Members of the team playing in the 2 single and 3 double matches were Judge R. V. Snead, Jack DeBergh, Bernard Dahlgren, Fannon Baumgardner, Col. Evan McNear and Maj. Richard McNear.
Sunday afternoon, June 16th at 2 p.m. the Rappahannock team will play the Sleepy Hollow Tennis Club at South Wales.
Speller Misses on
First Found of Bee
Cil Davis of Washington, rep resenting the Northern Piedmont area in the nations 1 spelling bee last week, was eliminated in the competition Thurs day when she misspelled the word bouquet. She skimmed over the word hurriedly, omit ting the second u; realized her mistake, but it was too late. No second chance was allowed. Winner of the national competition was Robert Walker, a 14-year-old boy from Topeka, Kansas. Robert said he had spent between 200 and 300 hours studying and making preparation for the spelling bee. He received the $1,000 grand prize, and a trip to New York. Ann Johnson of Minneapolis, Minn, was second place winner. Cil Davis received $50 for competing in the contest. Additional activity during her week in Washington included a trip to the Capitol, the Washington Monument, Mount Vernon and other points of interest araj a banquet for all contestants Friday night.
