These musk thistles with their lovely lavender bloom nodding in the breeze were discovered on the grassy banks of the dual lane highway near Massie s Corner. Apparently thei thistle seed was in the grass seed used by the contractor to sod the bank for prevention of erosion. Thistles have become an acute problem in agriculture and Virginia has declared war on them. When Bill Lyne discovered these, he cut each bloom off and put them in a sack to be burned then whacked down1 the remaining plant.
