‘Too late for chemical control, too many to grub!,” says Extension Agent Bill Lyne. With an infestation of curled thistle such as this, all anyone can do at this stage of maturity is to clip with a mower or bush-hog and thereby prevent seed being spread to other lands. Incidentally, Lyne said, he got into the picture just to show how rnnk this dreaded plant pest can grow. Here 10 to 15 acres were completely “taken” by the thistles. The Picture was snapped last week by Jim Bill Coates, ASCS Office Manager. He suggests anyone else interested in getting a picture like this to wear hip boots before wading into such a spiny mass of weeds. ASCS cost-share practice B-12, “controlling noxious •veeds in order to protect soil or water resources” includes chemical thistle control.
