Can Be Avoided
Both machinery and people contribute to power lawnmower accidents, the current issue of the Virginia Health Bulletin states, with up to 80,000 accident victimsa year in the United States as a result. The “close relationship public health workers have with the individual and his environment" is cited by the State Department of Health publication in its discussion of the concern caused by the increasing number of accidents involving power mower injuries.
State and local health departments seek to make people aware of the accident prob lem; assist in bringing about corrections of potential safety hazards; and motivate individuals to develop safe hazard^ the Bulletin states. It notes that mower injuries happen both to operators and bystanders, and to both experienced and inexperienced operators. It adds, however, that “a disproportionately large number of accidents happen to persons under 21 years of age, indicating that this is not a machine to put into the hands of an inexperienced person."
