Inspection Laws

The 1968 General Assembly approved two laws concerning tire tread depth and Inspection fees. Both of these laws will become effective June 28, 1968, They are as follows: 46.1- 295.3 (a) No person shall operate a motor vehicle registered in Virginia on any highway in this State, if such motor vehicle is equipped with one or more tires which either (1) when measured in any two adjacent tread grooves where the tread is thinnest, at three equally spaced intervals around the circumference of the tire and exclusive of “tie bars" by a tread depth gauge calibrated *4a thirty-seconds of an inch, is found to have tread depth of less than two thirty-seconds of an inch at such locations or (2) when equipped with tread wear indi cators, is found to have such indicators in contact with pave ment at any two adjacent grooves at three equally spaced intervals around the circumference of the tire. 46.1- 321 Charge for inspec tlon — Each official inspection station may make a charge of two dollars for each such inspection, but the imposition of such charge shall not be mandatory. No such charge shall be made unless the station contracts therefor beforehand.
