Over Pornography
Rep. John O. Marsh, Jr., said in Front Royal Friday that “the merchandising of pornography directed at young people has become big business and seems now to require the serious attention of the Federal Government, as it is a major interstate enterprise.”
The 7th District Congressman noted that President Nixon recently sent a special message to Congress on the subject.
Marsh spoke at a Boy Scout banquet in the Methodist Church social hall here' honoring Scoutmaster Kenneth Bovard on his retirement as Scoutmaster of Troop 52.
He praised, “the dedicated voluntary adult guidance contributed by such concerned citizens as Ken Bovard - a resource of leadership which is beyond price. The Scout program provides the type leadership that young men need to build character.”
“Much of this material is entering households in envelopes directed to minors, and there are indications that mailing lists of student-oriented publications are being used in some instances;” Marsh said; “in other cases, the unsolicited material is addressed to adults, or to a ‘postal patron’ with a notation on the envelope that the enclosure is for adults, and may be refused if unwanted -- an obvious incitement of the curiosity of young people in the home.”
