Army Specialist Five James R. Whitmer, whose parents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Haynes, live in Amissville, Va., received the Army Commendation Medal April 11 while serving with the 9th Infantry Division near Dong Tam, Vietnam.
Spec. Whitmer earned the award for meritorious service as a member of Headquarters Company of the division’s 9th Aviation Battalion.
The Army Commendation Medal' is awarded to personnel who while serving with the Army distinguish themselves by heroism, meritorious achievement or meritorious service. The medal was established by the Secretary of War on December 18,1945.
The 19-year-old soldier attended Culpeper High School.
