All the turkeys taken seem to have been for the most part, large birds. Hiis holds with the way it has been with all our game taken during the 1968-69 season. Everything has been of good size, relatively abundant and in top condition. Let’s hope this trend will continue for a few years.
Statewide, approximately 2000 pheasants have been released this Spring. Rappahannock County received 100 of those and the release was made on the Eldon Farm at Woodville. The hybrid Iranian Blackneck-Chinese Ringneck remains the mainstay of the Game Commission’s foreign game bird program. This was the species released here. These birds need, foremost for the next few years, suitable habitat and good protection. One of the most promising areas where these birds have been released is in Page County, which of course, habitat and terrain-wise is not much different than Rappahannock. Two previous releases have been made in the Flint Hill area. One in the Spring of ’67 and again in ’68. It is still too soon to determine if these stockings have been a success or failure. Often these birds will initially dwindle in number and then come back strong as a generation bom and raised in the wild begin to reproduce. It may take five or six years before any increase can be noticed. Probably 10 or more before a huntable population can be established'. It’s a long way to go at best, but hopefully these fine birds will like Rappahannock County and settle down here.
